2 | Curtis Jett gave the ground to establish a subscription school for his and his neighbors' children. The school was located about 1 1/2 miles from the mouth of Turkey Creek and its confluence with the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River. Miss Ann Searcy, from Madison County, Kentucky, near Richmond, was one of the teachers Curtis Jett employed. Miss Ann Searcy married Stephen Jett, Jr., the youngest son of Curtis Jett, even though she was several years older than her husband. When the last of the Jett children had passed through the school, it was discontinued and the property reverted to Curtis Jett. Together with his son Samuel, Curtis and his brother Newton Jett, acquired title to a number of acres of land in Breathitt and Owsley Counties, Kentucky. Curtis was a well-to-do farmer, merchang, miller, horse trader, and cattle buyer who spent his life in the Clay/Breathitt County areas of Kentucky. Due to increasing troubles, brought about by the Little-Crockrell feud, and the Jetts having allied themselves with the Cockrells against the Littles. Curtis Jett purchased a 205.5 acre farm on Muddy Creek in Madison County, Kentucky from Noah H. Tevis and his wife (deed book 23, p 49) on January 8, 1877. He immediately sent his son, Hiram Jett and Hiram's family away from Breathitt County to this farm in Madison County in an effort to isolate his son from the troubles in Breathitt County. | Jett, Curtis (I55565)

7 | The first King of all of England of the Anglo-Saxon line. Reigned 802-839, began reign as Ecbert III King of Wessex. In 800 at the death of KIng Brithric, Egbert was called by the voice of his countrymen to assume the gov't. of Wessex, & he subsequently succeeded in reducing all the Kingdoms of the Heptarchy under his sway. His reign, a long & glorious one, is memorable for the great victories he achieved over the Danes. He is known both as Ecbert, KIng of England, and Ecbert III, King of Wessex. Fighting Kings of Wessex, Baker: When his maternal uncle Eadberht Praen of Kent revolted from Mercian control in 798, he was captured, blinded & mutilated by Ceonwulf of Mercia, leaving Ecgbert as sole heir of the Kentish throne (thus uniting the rival houses of Ceawlin of Wessex & Aethilbert of Kent). Upon Ceonwulf's invasion of Kent, Ecgbert took refuge in Gaul. When King Beorhtric of Wessex died (abt 802), Ecgbert had no serious competitors to the throne of Wessex either & promptly returned to England from the Continent. He waited on his claim to Kent, but on the very day he was elevated to King of Wessex, the Mercians crossed the Thames in force. They were met by Alderman of Wiltshire Weohstan & held. Thus, Ecgbert was poised & ready to assume sovereignity of England. From same: In 825 Ecgbert seized Cornwall, before he could get back to Wessex, King Beornwulf of Mercia invaded Wessex. Ecgbert defeated him at Ellandune, & thereby restored the ancient kingdom borders of Wessex of Ine, holding all of England S of the Thames. He then sent his son Aethilwulf into Kent to drive out Baldred, the Mercian regulus. Not only Kent, Sussex & Surrey, but Essex too gave their submission to Aethilwulf. Suddenly Wessex was N of the Thames. Then the King of the East Angles asked Ecgbert for protection vs. the Mercians; Beornwulf staked his chance on reducing East Anglia before Ecgbert could arrive; he failed. Ecgbert arrived & slew Beornwulf & was suddenly the master of 1/3 of England. Four years of peace followed, then in 829 Ecgbert invaded & subdued Mercia and thus held all England up to the Humber; later in the year he invaded Northumbria, who offered him acceptable terms. Thus in three rapid, vigorous & complete campaigns, Ecgbert was master of all of England. In 831, Ecgbert entered Wales & established some kind of supremacy or suzerainity. He allowed Wiglaf of Mercia to return & hold the throne of Mercia. Ecgbert's hedgemony resulted in the unification of England as a political unit. Although it would take a couple generations to build, never agin did the separate English kingdoms of the heptarchy regain full sovereignity & independence. From this time forward, England was one nation. His last campaign was to subdue Cornwall, which had revolted & joined the Danes in resistance to English rule. The A-S Chronicle says he won a great victory, & to be sure the Danes never reached Wessex nor any points of strategic import, but it is equally true that Ecgbert never saw the Cornish Sea again. From same: We know nothing of Ecgbert's character other than his actions. He seems to have been a man who acted strictly on the basis of practicalities, rather than passion. He tended to the business at hand & got it done accordingly. As the Danes began their Viking raids, Ecgbert transformed England from weakened & disunited to a strong & united kingdom in sympathy with the Frankish empire of Charlemagne & his successors (& the last bastion of western Roman civilization) yet completely independent of it. BIOGRAPHY: After John W.'s death, Stephen H. Doom was guardian for his children, Isaac, Reuben and Gideon Cobb., October 7, 1875. Some records indicate that David C. was born in Virginia as well as was Martha Russell. ! Sept 4, 1809, David Fleming is listed having land on Wilson Creek, on North Side of Duck River, in Bedford Co., Tennessee. There is a state park there now. Deed book F pg 402, shows David Fleming as a occupant claim, May 17, 1810. ! David C & Martha (Patsey) Russell Fleming, last known residing in Carroll Co., Tenn, in the 1840 Census ======================= David C. Fleming is listed in the 1820 Bedford County, TN Census and other Flemings which may be related. Undisclosed in David's household were two males under 10 years old (Robert & David M.), one male 16-25, one male 26-44 (David C.), three females under 10 years old (Sarah J., Mary E., & Catherine N.), one female 26-44 (Martha). Son Robert would have been 25 years old and left the household. ================= !David Fleming married Martha (Patsy) Russell on 10-3-1803 in Oglethorpe County, GA. The date of this marriage would indicate David was born in approximately 1780. and Martha in 1785. ! Information in Carroll County, Tenessee Court House show that David lost his land at the Court House door to settle a tax lien. Evidence suggests that his first wife, MARTHA HAD DIED AND HE HAD REMARRIED. Looking at Census records in TN for 1820 & 1830 show a 15 year difference between husband and wife. However in 1840 there is a 20 year difference. ! Suspicion: Martha had died, the two boys could (20 & 25) were old enough to work. Mary was 16, old enough to help around the house and take care of 12 year old Catherine. The first record of John Rulaford Fleming is in the 1850 Caldwell County, KY Census showing him Undisclosed in the household of William and Catherine Roberts, he was 20 years old. Was he sent to live/work with "others" when his Mother died? ! If David did marry twice, the second wife's maiden name was RULAFORD because writings of Mary Ilene Fleming stated that John Rulaford Fleming was named after his Mother. ! 1850 Census, Caldwell Co., KY, Sept. 26, 1850 dwelling 825; family 825: Page 21; William Roberts; age 22; laborer; born Tennessee; wife Catherine, Robert, George W., Robert; age 5; John Fleming; age 20; laborer; born Tennessee. (This is the John Rulaford Fleming shown above.) !FLEMING SURNAME HISTORY by Paul McCotter !The majority of Irish Flemings must descend from the many individual Flemings who settled throughout the Anglo-Norman colonial area at the time of the invasion. Certainly the name occurs in virtually every colonial county in the Justiciary Rolls of the period 1295-1314. A particularly important family of the name were lords of Slane in County Meath. !The surname is scattered throughout Ireland and those in the three southern provinces certainly descend in general from settlers of the Anglo-Norman period. In Ulster most Flemings must descend from seventeenth century Scottish settlers, Fleming being a leading Scottish surname although ultimately of the same origin as the Irish name. | Fleming, David C. 82 | ! Eulogy delivered by husband Andrew. JOAN MCCORD HINSHAW - who was she--what were her early days like - what had she done in her life - how best can we describe her as a person? ! She was born 49 years ago on Church Street in this town of Centerville, TN. Her mother's maiden name was Hudspeth, Johny (Hudspeth) Crowe and her father is John Paul McCord, both of who survive her and are here today to honor her memory. ! Joan, by all accounts was one of the prettiest girls in Centerville. She was very active and by her own words one of the best roller skaters in this area. She claimed to have skated on every paved street, every sidewalk, every curb, and every church step in town. ! Joan's life - until she was twelve - was spent with her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in the immediate area of her birthplace. When she was twelve she went to live with her mother and stepfather, Robert Crowe (1914-1896) of Nunnelly, Tennessee who were then residing in Meridian, Mississippi. At an early age she married and had one daughter by that marriage, Lisa Gullet. ! During her years in Centerville and Meridian, Joan became very proficient in the art of dance, which later became her profession in both Mississippi and New York. Her early years of family involvement again became instrumental in her life and she married Caby Smith and by him gave birth to two additional children, Caby Carroll Smith and Fara Leigh Smith. Joan and her family moved to the Washington, D. C. - Virginia area, and at a later point the marriage failed but the children and the parents remained on friendly terms and all lived in the immediate area. ! However, Joan always striving to be a good mother and example to her children displayed her work ethic and pride in accomplishment to became a key cog in the wheel of political campaigns on the national level. She campaigned for candidates for the U. S. Senate and the House of Representatives. ! These endeavors resulted in her becoming the radio and television editor for political campaigns for the House of Representatives Congressional Campaign Committee. She advised, demonstrated, and directly assisted Members of Congress and a Vice President in recording comments for public release. ! After she had performed these tasks so well she became Administrative Assistant to Congressman Andrew Hinshaw in charge of his Washington office and played another key role in his re-election campaign. Joan and Mr. Hinshaw became mutual professional admirers from their first meeting and later became husband and wife. ! So Joan, from humble beginnings in this town, rose to a professional dancing career and parlayed her expertise in meeting and performing before the public to participating in a key way at the highest legislative levels in the Country - a real service to us all. ! In the course of this, she directed a large Congressional staff, directed research for legislation, advised Congressional committee staffs, and was a spokesperson for Congressmen in their absences. SHE WAS AN ACHIEVER. More recently she worked for an interior decorating firm in Nashville, again in the public eye. ! Notwithstanding all these personal achievements, she was a family person who yearned for all her family ties. After all her children were grown and away from home, she wanted to move back to Centerville to be with other family, aunts, uncles, parents, cousins, and with friends. ! Joan carried her poise, beauty, and concern for others well-being with her to the moment of her death. To her- after all the persona! accomplishments - family and personal happiness outweighed all the adulation and esteem that public life can offer. ! She epitomized a good mother, a good wife, and a good daughter--and in doing so leaves a legacy so important to us all - be honest, true, helpful, and live with those features so necessary if we are to fulfill the wishes of our Lord and Saviour --- SHE DID IT HER WAY and is loved for that. ! Her husband, her mother and father, her children, her aunts, uncles and family and friends and the father of her children are here to pay her homage as a person and to show their love for her and for the wholesomeness she typified. ! Joan's early religious training was at the Church of Christ across from where she was born. She was a firm believer in her faith and those who knew her best know that she is happy being with our Lord and that she died knowing that her children had the very best she could offer, and no more than that can any of us offer to anyone. ! The song you are about to hear, "Softly As I Leave You Now", sung by Elvis Presley is a true story about a woman who knows she is about to die. She is awake and looking at her sleeping husband sitting in an adjacent chair. The words express her thoughts that she wants to die before her husband awakes and asks her to stay for another hour. The song expresses better than any words spoken here how Joan felt about leaving all of us, her family and friends. God Bless Her. ! JOAN MCCORDS ANCESTORS WERE: John Paul McCord and Johny Hudspeth. JOHN JAMES MARSHALL was born in Woodford county, Kentucky, on the 4th of August, 1785, a son of Humphrey and Mary Marshall. He had rare advantages for securing an education and won first honors of his class in Princeton College, of New Jersey, where he was graduated in 1806. He then took up the study of law under the direction of his father and after careful preparation for the profession began practice, gaining a high reputation and a liberal patronage. Inheriting from his father a fortune of ample proportions, he nevertheless made for himself a career at the bar that classed him among the distinguished jurists of the state. Like the other members of his family, he too was called to public life by the vote of the people, and for many years served in the general assembly where his support to wise legislative measures made him a valued member of both the house and senate. He represented Franklin county in the legislature in 1815 and 1816, and in 1820 was elected to the senate for a four-years term. From 1829 until 1833 he was reporter of the court of appeals and published seven volumes of decisions of cases of law and equity. in 1833 he served as elector, and the same year was once more elected representative from his district to the state legislature. In 1837 he was appointed by Governor James Clark judge of the circuit embracing Louisville, and removed to that city. He continued to occupy that office up to the date of his death. During the financial crisis which swept over the country in 1837 Mr. Marshall lost his property, this being occasioned by the generous support which he gave to friends in need of financial assistance. The trouble and anxiety which therefore ensued undoubtedly hastened his death, which occurred in Louisville in July, 1846. He was for many years a leading politician in Kentucky, was recognized as a brilliant lawyer and a just and conscientious judge, and left the impress of his powerful mind on the jurisprudence of the state. | Marshall, Judge John James (I31588)
