According to Gilbert "Gibbo" Gerdes, the twist to the "Last ChanceSaloon" was that on the opposite side of the sign, it read "First ChanceSaloon". The side of the sign facing in the direction of the trainstation was the side that said "Last Chance Saloon".
He was a Civil War veteran. All the years of his life were lived in Lavaca Co, Principally at Hallettesville except a few years with his daughter in Schulenburg. He was a member of the Catholic Church and a member of the ODHS Lodge. When he died he had 29 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
