    VALENTINE MARIE WINSLOW (Aunt Vollie) was the mother of twin daughters Grace and Mabel Winslow born in 1905. Vollie, Grace and Mable were all three nurses and well respected in their profession in San Saba, TX. Grace and Mable lived into their 70's. Grace Winslow married Harry C. Timberlake and they had two daughters, Ruth Louise and Martha. Ruth married and became an International Lawyer in Washington D. C. Martha married and is now (1998) Martha Williams and is with the District Clerk's office in Marble Falls, TX. Aunt Vollie lived to be 96 years of age.

    In their later years, Vollie, Willie and George Winslow (siblings) shared a home in San Saba, TX, until their
    deaths. Just across the street and on the corner from Aunt Vollie, lived my Uncle Hardin (Winslow) and Aunt Ellie (Hamrick).

    Aunt Vollie and my Grandfather Henry Walker, Sr., (brother and sister) were born in Missouri before the family arrived in TX, sometime after June 1881.

    HENRY BEVERLY WINSLOW, JR., (great Grandfather to BARBARA BALLARD) was buried in the San Saba City Cemetery, San Saba, TX. He came to San Saba County from Shackleford, Missouri, and first settled in the Cherokee section, later moving to San Saba, where he operated a meat market for number of years. He was married in Missouri to MARTHA E. WALKER (my Great Grandmother) whose family came to San Saba County about the same time. Martha died and Great Grandfather Henry married a second time to Mrs. Elizabeth Low Brown, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.D. Low. ELIZA BROWN WINSLOW was born 11 Mar 1854, d. 25 Dec. 1945. Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Low were among the first settlers in SanSaba County.

    Henry B. Winslow came to San Saba County from Shackleford, Saline Co., Missouri, and first settled in the Cherokee section, later moving to San Saba, where he operated a meat market for a number of years. He was married in Missouri to Martha Walker whose family came to San Saba County about the same time. Mrs. Winslow died about 40 years ago (book published in 1969, BJB), leaving the children listed in foregoing paragraph. A son Haynes died sometime before his mother's death.

    MARTHA E. WALKER was a daughter of Hiram F. Walker. They were Undisclosed in Vernon Co., Missouri, where she was married to my Great Grandfather, Henry Beverly Winslow. On their marriage record,
    she was referred to as Margaret E. Walker, dated Aug 1873. She was buried in the San Saba City
    Cemetery, San Saba, TX. Buried with Martha and Henry B. Winslow, is her brother J.B. GORDON, b.
    28 May 1818, d. 24 May 1878. Close by are the graves of Hiram F. Walker, b. 5 Oct. 1828, d. 22 Mar.
    1906, and Mary M. Gordon, b. 6 Sep. 1829, d. 20 Sep 1884. (Hiram and Mary are Barbara Ballard's GG/Grandparents.) Hiram Walker and J.B. Gordon were both in the MASON organization.

    HIRAM FERIS WALKER and his wife MARY M. GORDON are buried in San Saba City Cemetery. He was a Mason. In the "HISTORY of VERNON COUNTY, MISSOURI," published by Brown & Co.
    in 1887, "Hiram F. Walker, an old and prominent resident, for whom the town was named, and Wm. Leslie were the original owners of the land in the town of Walker." Also quoting: "Walker township is almost entirely underlaid with coal at a shallow depth from the surface, in most places at from two to four feet. The vein is generally three feet in thickness, and reached by "stripping."

    THE SAN SABA COUNTY NEWS, p.4, Vol. XXXII, #13, 29 March 1906: "Mr. H. F. Walker died at 7:05 o'clock Thursday evening, the 22nd, at the home of his son, P.H. Walker. He had been sick several weeks. Rev. A. L. Scarborough conducted services at the home at 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, after which the Masons took charge, opened the ceremony, marched to the grave and there with the grand honors of the Order, laid the body to rest. Mr. Walker was born in LaFayette County, MO., 77 years ago. The children who survive him are S. W., W. W., and P. H. Walker and Mrs. Lucy Doran, San Saba. Mrs. Joe T. Williams, Brady, and G. G. Walker, Richmond, California." (Death Certificate for Hiram Farris Walker, #50456 Texas State Department of Health). He was the son of Samuel Wilcoxson Walker and Nancy Farris, and through the WILCOXSON line, we are related to DANIEL BOONE and wife REBECCA.

    HIRAM WALKER and MARY M. GORDON are great, great grandparents to Barbara Ballard.

    In 1850 Missouri census, HIRAM was in Lafayette Co., MO.

    HIRAM was a rancher and a blacksmith; was a Methodist by religion. He and family came to San Saba County, TX, in early 1870's and served as County Commissioner as did all of his sons. "Unusual in the life of the family is the fact that the father and all four sons served as county commissioners for San Saba County.

    After reaching manhood the sons were successfully engaged in the livestock business in San Saba County. They and members of their families, as well as the families of the sisters, have meant much to the county and city of their adoption."
