Edmund Beaufort II *styled* himself 4th Duke of Somerset,(ie, the 4th Beaufort to be duke) or technically 3rd duke (from the dukedom's second creation in 1448). There was no stable tenure in the dukedom for the family; it was shortlived and tenuous 1443-61, 1463-64. The 1st duke was John II (d. 1444), 3rd Earl of Somerset; the dukedom was created in 1443. His brother Edmund I (d. 1455) succeeded as 4th earl, was created (2nd Beaufort) Duke of Somerset in 1448. Edmund's son Henry II (d. 1464) technically succeeded as 5th earl (3rd Beaufort) duke in 1455, was attainted 1461, restored 1463; the restoration was nullified 1464. Henry's brother Edmund II (d.1471) was next in line but not recogized as either 6th earl or 4th duke by the Yorkists. Left out above, for the sake of clarity, was the family's equally tenuous earldom of Dorset (1411-26, 1441-61, 1463-64) and marquessate of Dorset (1397-99, 1443-61, 1463-64), peerages sometimes held simultaneously with the Somerset titles.
