    • Name: Will

    Notes:

WD Coffey came to Texas in 1879 at the age of 19 with his brother Frank to start a grocery store in Farmersville.

WD Coffey moved from Farmersville, TX to Victoria, TX in 1914. WD had been invited by the city business community to open a grocery store in Victoria. For the trip he rented a railroad car for most of their belongings while everyone else came in cars. When they got to Victoria, a welcoming committee greeted them and gave them a grand tour of the city. They visited places like the Welder Mansion, which use to be located across from the old sears building in downtown Victoria.

WD opened WD Coffey Cash Grocery in downtown Victoria on the 100 block Juan Linn just across from the now City Hall. Thaddeus worked with WD in the store. The girls and Mary Coffey would come to the store just to get foot and supplies.

There home was a 2-story house located on the corner of Main and Goodwin streets where the O’Connor Plaza now stands.

All the Coffey girls were excellent cooks and did all the cooking. Mary Coffey taught them well. Aunt True use to boast how she could take 1 chicken and make it last for 3 meals. WD Coffey is said to love raw oysters.

Mary Coffey was a seamstress and taught all the girls. Ruth Sergeant remembers her aunts Lottie, Kate and True and grandma Mary Coffey all sewing together making cloths for the kids. Ruth remembers them making a coat for her.

Mary Coffey and some of her family would visit her twin sister Martha Allie Elliston in Abilene Texas from time to time.

When uncle Thaddeus went into the service during WW I, Mary Coffey was very sad and cried a lot over it.

During Thanksgiving and Christmas, all the kids and family would get together at the Coffey home. Everybody would bring food and all those young boys (Jack, Slick, Chester, Hester,…) would get into some humdinger of some fights.

    In the later years:

Ben Frank and Stella Skinner lived with WD and Mary Coffey and stayed in an upstairs room. WD would expect a card game or domino game after supper. Ben Frank and Stella and some of the kids and grandkids would always be there to play games with Wd and Mary.

WD Coffey would always carry a matchbox with him and he could be seen gently turning it in his hands.

Grandpa WD Coffey had bad problems with the circulation in his legs (hardening of the arteries). He was laid up at his house in bed for quite a while in extreme pain. The kids would all take turns sitting with him until he passed away.

William married Mary Alice Wilcoxson on 20 Aug 1882 in Farmersville, Collin, Texas. Mary (daughter of Coleman William "Tobe" Wilcoxson and Mary Ann Morrow) was born on 15 Jul 1865 in Farmersville, Collin, Texas; died on 3 Apr 1954 in Victoria, Victoria, Texas, USA; was buried on 5 Apr 1954 in Evergreen Cemetery, Victoria, TX..
