    William was enlisted in the Confederate Army August 24, 1861 in Hallettsville, Texas by John W. Whitfield. According to the service record from General Services Administration in Washington, D.C., he rode his horse valued at $125.00 to Fort Smith, Arkansas, a distance of 650 miles to muster - in September 1861. He was wounded in his left leg at the Battle of Iuka, September 19, 1862, and had the leg amputated. He returned to Lavaca County and lived for several years. He died at Charco in Goliad County, Texas where he was buried.

    The 1860 census of Lavaca County, Texas listed: Daniel Rhode, 56, from South Carolina, Charity, 48, from South Carolina, John, 19, from Mississippi, Martha, 16, from Mississippi, Webster,14, from Mississippi, Lawrence, 11, from Mississippi, Jefferson, 7, from Mississippi.
    The 1870 cencus from Lavaca County, Texas listed: Daniel Rhode, 63, from South Carolina, Charity,, 56, from South Carolina, John, 30, Webster, 24, Lawrence, 21, and Jefferson, 17.
    There were eleven children.
    Daniel and Charity and family, with many other families left Brandon, Mississippi by ox-wagon and settled in Karnes County, Texas in 1854. Two years later they settled in Lavaca County where they lived until they died. They are buried in the Shiloh Cemetery, a camp ground they helped organize and named for one the left in Mississippi.
