  1. 2.  William Alfred Hinshaw was born on 14 Jun 1872 in Berkley, Ballard, County, KY (son of Andrew Jackson Hinshaw and Nancy L. Godwin-Mcdougal); died on 11 May 1958 in East Prarie, Mississippi, County, MO; was buried on 13 May 1958 in I.O.O.F. Cem., Charleston, Mississippi, County, MO.

    Notes:

    !Social Security No. 432-44-7635

! The Hinshaw family was shown in the 1930 census (Apr 15 1930), 260 E.
    Wilson, Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan:
Hinshaw, William A., head-of-household, age 56, born in Kentucky; parents
born in Kentucky; rented home ($30 rent); no radio in home; occupation:
general repair, auto factory; not a veteran.

!William Alfred Hinshaw, *Berkley, (Ballard County - now Carlisle)
    Kentucky, b June 14, 1872, d 5-11-1958 at age 86 in East Prairie, Missouri
and buried in the Oddfellows Cemetery in Charleston, Missouri. William left
home at the age of 16.

!Married Kate Florence Cook, daughter of Sebrene and Polly Cook. Kate was
born November 1873, five months younger than William. She died when her
children were young, before 12-16-01 which is the date of his marriage to
his second wife, Lucy A. (Grace) Campbell. Some believe that Kate Florence
was 1/16 Cherokee Indian, although there seems to be no documentation of
this claim. William and Kate were married seven years and had three
children, Dora (about1893-1894); Millie Estelle (1896-1983); and Luther
Milton (1898 - 1961), with only Millie and Luther Undisclosed at the time of the
1900 Census, thus the marriage took place in approximately 1892 when
William was 20 and Kate was 19 years of age.

!On 11-18-1911 Lucy (the second wife) and William sold their undivided
interest in certain real estate to William's brother Luther L. According
to his third wife, Mary Ilene (Fleming) Hinshaw, Lucy was still alive
between 10-2-1925 and 2-9-1926 when Ilene wrote that because of poor
economic conditions she told William "I want to go to Mt. Clemens,
Michigan, so when he was gone to visit his SECOND FAMILY I started
    sewing and ....."

!The 1890 census of Mississippi County, MO lists William as working as a
saw mill laborer. He later operated a ferry boat (which ran from Dorena,
MO to Hickman, KY - the scenes of almost all this family's early history.

! Buried in the Hinshaw plot in the Brownsville Cemetery, Fulton Hickman
County, KY.; is William's father, Andrew Jackson (and other siblings/wives.

!William was 29 at the time of his second marriage to Lucy and she was
    32. Lucy had previously married William E. Campbell on 9-25-1884 in
Mississippi County MO and they had three children, Rosa F. (2-1889), James
    E. (10-1891) and George T. (3-1894). Lucy's parents were Judge James or
    I) D. Grace (b 1833/1852 d 11-1895) and Lucretia (b 1-1844) Grace. In
addition to Lucy, they had two other daughters, Sarah and Hattie L.
(12-1874), who married Jefferson Goodman, according to the 1900 Census
of James Bayou Township of Mississippi County, Missouri. The will of Judge
James D. Grace listed no heirs other than his widow, Lucretia.

!In 1910 Lucy and William were Undisclosed on Troy Road in Fulton County,
Kentucky according to the Census of that year. The Census lists the
children (Millie and Luther Hinshaw) and (Rosa Campbell (age 21), James
Campbell (age18), Tom Campbell (age 16) and Lucretia Grace, (age 66)
(mother-in-law) as Undisclosed in the household. The house was owned by Lucy.

!In court papers of the James Bayou Township, Mississippi county, MO
filed on 3-18-1913 regarding an action for non-payment of gas and oil in
the amount of $93.45 during 1912 owed to the Standard Oil Company it
appears that Dad, Lucy and her son, James, were is a partnership
involving three boats - the Mary, Dixie, and Fox. The claimed amount was
paid to Standard Oil in 1913. What the boats were used for is not known.

!Lucy petitioned for and was granted a divorce effective October 9, 1915.
Mary Ilene Fleming, and William were married on 11-17-1915 by Mr. J.F.
Williams, Justice of the Peace, in Shelby County, Tennessee according to
their Marriage License only one month after the divorce.

!Missouri Standard Certificate of Death No. 58-019049 for William.

William married Mary Ilene Fleming on 17 Nov 1915 in Shelby County, TN, IL. Mary (daughter of John Wesley Fleming and Minnie Elizabeth Ennis) was born on 3 May 1894 in Eureka, Lyon, County, KY; died on 27 Jan 1980 in Mission Viejo, Orange, County, CA; was buried on 1 Feb 1980 in Inglewood Park, Cemetery, Inglewood, L.A. ! Ilene's Marriage Certificate shows her marriage to William on
11-17-15 by Mr. J.F. Williams, Justice of the Peace, Shelby County,
Tennessee. According to the Hinshaw Family Association records Ilene
and William were married on 11-17-15, in Carrier Mills, Saline County,
Illinois. They probably took out a license in Carrier Mills, couldn't
complete the marriage and then went to Shelby County.

! Mary Ilene (Fleming) Hinshaw, born 5-3-1894 died 1-27-1980, born in
Eureka, Lyon County (#3754), Kentucky, buried Inglewood Park Cemetary,

  1. 4.  Andrew Jackson Hinshaw was born on 10 Aug 1831 in Warren, County, TN; died on 22 Mar 1888 in Mississippi, County, MO; was buried in Brownsville Cem., Fulton County, KY.

    Notes:

!The Death Certificate of Nancy, the second wife of Andrew Jackson,
clearly shows her maiden name (Godwin), dates of birth and death.

!There is a contradictory statement on his son's (William Alfred's) Death
Certificate where she is shown as Nancy Tubbs, although this
    contradiction can be rationalized.

!The Nancy Tubbs information was provided to Missouri Vital Statistics
by his son Luther Milton Hinshaw (Sr.). However Nancy Tubbs was born
4-12-1885 and died before 1900. long after Andrew J's. children were
born. This listing of Nancy Tubbs is explained away when it is known
that her sister, Lela Frances Tubbs (1889-1978) married Oscar Jackson,
also a son of Andrew J., and Luther (my half-brother) incorrectly
    attributed Tubbs to A.J.

    !Andrew J. first married: Frances A. Goldsmith (born Indiana, 1838-39;
Undisclosed 1860; probably died about 1864. On 10-30-1856 according to
Mississippi County marriage records, and they had four children William
    T., (1858) George A. (1860); Isabella (1862) and Joseph (1863).

! Andrew and family were shown in the 1860 census (Jul 13 1860),
    Columbus District, Hickman County, Kentucky...
    A. J. Hinshaw, age 27, born in Tennessee; farmer; $500 real estate; $160
personal property; cannot read or write.
Frances A. Hinshaw, age 21, born in Indiana.
William T. Hinshaw, age 1, born in Kentucky.
Undisclosed two houses away was Thomas & Catherine Goldsmith, who might
have been the parents of Frances.

!He then married Mrs. Nancy McDougal on 9-1-1867 in the presence of
George O. Gibson and M.G. Malone. This is documented in the Hickman
County Marriage Book, page 358, The only way for Nancy Godwin to have
been married to A.J. if she had previously been married to a Mr. McDougal,
for the Godwin Generalogy clearly shows Nancy L. Godwin married to A.J.
and the names of their six children, N.C. (1868); John (1870); William
    Alfred (1873); Luther (1877); Lillie (1879) and Oscar (1881). The 1910
census for Mississippi County, MO lists Nancy L. Hinshaw as having been
    married twice.

!The 1860 census for Hickman Co., KY, Columbus Dist., dwelling 388,
family 368, page 494, shows A. J. Hinshaw, white, male, farmer, born
Tennessee, $500 real estate and $160 personal estate; married to Frances
A., age 21, born Indiana; William T. Hinshaw, age I, born
Kentucky; and one additional person in this household: Carroll Hinshaw,
age 22, laborer, born Temessee, probably a cousin. The marriage records
for Mississippi Co., MO, which is across the Mississippi River from
Hickman Co., KY, show the marriage of this couple as: Andrew L. (sic)
Hinshaw and Frances A. Goldsmith, on Oct. 30, 1856. The Goldsmith
family is shown in Hickman Co., KY, on the same census page as A. J.
Hinshaw and Frances A., his wife.

!The headstone in the Brownsville Cemetery, Hickman, KY for A.J. lists:
Born August 10, 1831, Died March 22, 1887. "Heaven now retains our
treasure; Earth the lonely casket keeps, and the sunbeams long to linger
where our sainted Father sleeps." His headstone adjoins his son, John S.,
    Rita's father (4-4-1870 to 1-18-1899) and Rita's mother, Lizzie (2-9-1880
    to 5-15-1897).

!The 1880 Census shows the following:
    A. J. HINSHAW Self M Male W 46 TN Farmer
    Nancy G. HINSHAW Wife M Female W 37 TN
Joe HINSHAW Son S Male W 16 MO At Home

Nancy, at age 78 in 1920 (listed as head of the household and only her
son Luther Undisclosed with her, she died 6-8-1927). She would have been 87
years of age. Frances (daughter of Oscar) said Luther claimed a reason he
never married was his obligation to his mother, also remembers that Nancy
was alive during the 1927 flood.

! Nancy's father was William Cornelius Godwin, born 5-11-1812, died

! Died of a stroke, she was the daughter of Joe Ennis and Kate
    Montgomery Church.

! The following comments are notes of Mary Ilene Fleming (Hinshaw )

! Joe Ennis was the son of William Barton Ennis and Elizabeth Gregory.

! Kate Montgomery Church was the daughter of James Clark Church and
Mary Willet Manley (the daughter of a Willet).

! William Barton Ennis (formerly Innis as stated by himself), son of a
tailor, Scotch-Irish from the old country, lived in Eddysville, Kentucky.
He married Elizabeth Gregory, a sister of this Gregory married John
    Matthews (a prosperous farmer).

! Mary Willet Manley (Church) - married James Clark Church (below) had one
brother, William Manly in Logansport, Indiana who was an
undertaker - had been raised in Maryland. Sister Mary married first to
HULL (an artist) and traveled with him. Hull died of consumption and she
    then married James Church.

! James Clark Church, (married Mary Willet Manly) an Englishman, was a
teacher and Superintendent of County Schools in Lyon County, Kentucky
(Mary Ilene Fleming's birth County). He was also coroner and a surveyor.
His father (was unknown to the descendants) - went to England to settle an
estate and nothing was ever known what he did with the money. There was
some mystery aboard ship and he was never the same after the experience
    - some suspicions about what happened. He was a stone mason and
numbered every stone in his estate home. Mary Manley Church dreamed he
had hidden the money under a certain stone in the cellar with a certain
number. Her husband, James, went down to the cellar, found the number
as dreamed, but because James considered it a superstition, wouldn't dig
for the money. Strange - when James died and was being buried the old
homestead burned to the ground. This seemed to many as someone with
insight burning the evidence of treasure.

! Mary Manly had many such dreams as above. Once when Undisclosed far into the
country in Kentucky dreamed her brother William (Undisclosed in Logansport) was
dead and that a letter was at the post office in town telling of his death.
After much persuading her husband, James, got on his horse and went
through the snow and sleet to town - the letter was there (edged in black)
    telling of the death.

! Elizabeth Gregory's, sister married John Matthews, a big farmer.

Company H of the 20th Kentucky Volunteer Regiment Infantry (Union). Film

! The 20th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, USA was organized late 1861 and
mustered into United States service 6 Jan 1862 at Smithland, Kentucky
(Livingston County). It participated in the battles Shiloh, TN, Corinth, MS,
Lebanon, KY, Kenesaw Mountain, GA, Dallas, GA, Ackworth, GA, and Atlanta,
Georgia. It was mustered out at Louisville, KY, 17 January 1865 with the
members being transferred to the 6th KY Veteran Cavalry. Abstracted
    from the Adjutant General Report

! "It was early April in 1862 (this may have been 1861) and a detachment
from General Lew Wallace's army had reached Smithland, Ky., along the
Dover Road. The man in charge was the Reverend John Rulaford Fleming,
who had freed his slaves and joined the Union forces. He was a native
Lyon countian, his family still remaining there.

! "On this particular occasion his wife, Isabella (Peek) Fleming, had the
good fortune of meeting him there with their infant baby (Madora
Adeline, the mother of the author of this article) who was two months
old. She had ridden there by horseback, accompanied by a former slave who
helped with the new baby. The mother's prized attire--a dress
skirt--is now on loan to the Market House Museum in Paducah and may be
    viewed there

! "The event was a joyous one and the happenings of this meeting hold
treasured memories which have been told and retold to the generations
which followed. This quest of adventure and command of men was to
lead to Shiloh over the Dover Road, where Grant's men had been camping.
It was the leader's task, a man who had left his position as a Methodist
minister, with conviction and compulsion, to accompany this mission for the
    Union.

! "Leaving Smithland he marched his men, and reached Gum Springs
Baptist Church by nightfall. Here he conducted a prayer meeting, and
they rested and camped until morning.

! "On the second day there was an advance of about 16 miles, when they
reached the cross roads of the Dover Road and stopped at a small
community then known as Nickellville, the name bearing relation to the
families Undisclosed there by that name. It consisted of a country store and a
    few homes.

! "After resting and refreshing themselves as best as they could the men
took the train again to proceed to Golden Pond. This was the last sojourn
before pursuing the remaining stretch of road to Dover, Tennessee and
finally to Shiloh where the battle occurred. The heaviest losses for both
    sides were there.

! "In three years the war was over-in 1865. The men came home. There
was much to be done toward reconstruction."

    ! "On February 5, 1862 John R. is wounded. On February 8, 1862 he
tenders his resignation from the regiment. I obtained a copy of John's file
from the U.S. Pension Agency, dated June 28, 1896 which states" John R.
Fleming, lst Lt of 20 KY, who was a pensioner of this Agency under
Certificate No. 351432 and who was last paid $24 to 1st of November
1895, has been dropped because of death, December 20, 1895."

!After John R. died on December 20, 1895, hia wife, Isabella, filed for the
pension on John R. on November 28, 1902 until November 24, 1914 when
the Department of the Interior dropped Isabella from the pension rolls due
to her death on August 21, 1914. On July 20, 1897 J.M. Smith, Clerk of
the Lyon county Court filed an affidavit for Isabella's petition for her
Widow's Pension stating that "Mrs. Isabella Fleming is assessed for
Taxation for same year of 1897 with 181 acres of land (value $605) and
personal property of $34 making a total of $639."

! The 20th Regiment was mustered in on January 6, 1862 and mustered out
    on January 17, 1865.

    !Dear John:

! Thanks for the Fleming information you sent to me. It is both enlightening
    and helpful.

!1.Referring first to your cover letter (email) of December 4, 1998
paragraphs 5 & 6. The Rulaford name came from my mother's writings and
    original notes, see attached.

! I failed to notice the discrepancy you pointed out between my mother's
"Rulaford" notation that Rulaford was his mother's maiden name and the
later information about her g-grandfather, David Fleming married Martha
    (Patsy) Russell.

! Adding further confusion is that one of John R. Fleming's sons (Edward
Gyer Fleming) had a son named George Ruleford (sic) Fleming.

! Further complicating this situation are the following notes received
from you "Information in Carroll Co. Tenessee Court House show that
David lost his land at the Court House door to settle a tax lien. Evidence
suggests that his first wife, MARTHA HAD DIED PRIOR TO THIS AND HE HAD
REMARRIED. Looking at Census records in TN for 1820 & 1830 show a 15
year difference between husband and wife, However in 1840 there is
a 20 year difference. If David did marry twice, the second wife's maiden
    name could have been RULAFORD/RULEFORD.

John married Isabella A._(Mary) Peek on 18 Jul 1854 in Crittenden, County, KY. Isabella (daughter of Thomas W. Peek and Frances Marshall) was born on 1 Jun 1834 in Caldwell, County, KY; died on 22 Aug 1914 in Eureka, Lyon County, KY; was buried in Jones Cemetery, Lyon County, KY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

! Isabella's maiden name was misspelled on her Marriage Certificate as
"Peake" - of which there were many such persons in the area.

! The 1900 Lyon County census shows Isabella (Peek) Fleming) Undisclosed in the
household of Thomas Logan Boucher and her daughter, Madora (Dora)
Adeline. Also included were Isabella's grandchildren Lora (12), Josephine
(10), Edgar (4), and Russell (2). They were the children of Mary Belle Koon
(Fleming) who died May 18, 1900). It is not known what happened to their
    father, Jefferson Davis Koon.
