Howell Pope Hale and Mary Emma Holt were married in First Baptist Church, Henderson, by Rev. J. L. Barrett, pastor. Howell Pope Hale raised cotton, worked in Longview, then owned Southern Hardware Store in Kilgore. Much of the land he accumulated in Kilgore produced oil income. He served on the Boards of both the Kilgore Public Schools and Kilgore College (voluntarily relinquishing the latter to make room for a Gladewater representative when that city came into the college district). Mary Emma Holt Hale, born in New London, attended Alexander Institute in Kilgore, a private school and a forerunner of Jacksonville Baptist College. She was an outstanding cook.
