Generation: 4

  1. 12.  James Nathan Screws was born in 1815 in Rutherford Co., TN; died in Mar 1860 in Bosque Co., TX.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact 1: Fact 1

    Notes:

Birth: based on 1850 Rusk Co, Tx Census

Death: 1860 Bosque Co Mortality Schedule, which states he died of typhoid fever.

Burial: Altho no marker exists, Birdie Speers, granddaughter, insisted they were buried in the Meridian City Cemetery near the front gate. Her father had shown her the graves. Rosalynn's son, Henry Albert Brown, is buried there as well as
    numerous other relatives.

Apprenticed to Orvell Freeman as a carpenter.

    Migration:

1839 Jefferson Co, Ar Tax Rolls

1846 Rusk Co, Tx Tax Roll

    1850 Rusk Co, Tx Census

1854 Land Record: Nathan sold to Christopher B. Bacon, 16 Jan 1854, land in Rusk Co.

Bosque Co: Land and People article which states Nathan, a carpenter, built the first courthouse and jail in Bosque Co in the early 1850's.

Bosque Co Historical Marker names him as one of the early settlers.

1860 Bosque Co, Tx Mortality Schedule

After much consideration and research, altho all records I have found list him as Nathan, I believe his full name to have been either James Nathan or James Nathaniel. Reasons: Jim Screws said in interview with Birdie Speers that she
repeatedly named her grandfather as James Nathaniel. Also, his daughter Francis named a son, James Nathan. Penchant in this family for several first names.

  2. 13.  Matilda Rosalynn McCurry was born in 1819 in South Carolina (daughter of William Carey McCurry and Black?); died in Bosque Co., TX.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact 1: Fact 1

    Notes:

    Birth: 1850, 1860 Census

    Death:

    Burial: See Nathan's note

    Migration:

1819 Birth in South Carolina per 1850, 1860 Census

1830 Alabama ..probably Butler Co, where her father was a magistrate. Birthplace of Henry Albert, eldest child.

1840 Jefferson Co Ar Census..altho not named on the census, her father and Nathan were both there at the time.

    1850 Rusk Co Tx Census

    1860 Bosque Co Tx Census

According to Birdie Speers, granddaughter, her middle name was pronounced Rosa Line. In her brother Marcellus' letter to his sister-in-law Malinda McCurry, he inquires after "Line's children". However, the name was spelled Rosalynn according
    to Birdie.

It appears by all accounts that she had been previously married to a Brown. The first child, possibly 3 more children, were hers from that marriage. Birdie listed only 4 children belonging to Nathan and mentioned half-siblings but seemed a
bit confused as to the number.

Curiously enough, from the listing on the 1850 census, there might have been a prev. marriage for Nathan as well. Children listed seem to be as 2 separate families, i.e. ages:

Henry Elbert, 15; Mary M, 11; Christopher Col, 1; Lavina Jane, 4; and John Wesley, 2.

Normally children would be listed in order of birth. However, if one or other of the couple were giving the information, they probably would have listed their own children first, then steps. In this case, we know Henry Elbert was actually
Henry Albert Brown, therefore it is likely Rosalynn was providing the information, naming her children in order of birth; followed by her step-children. We did find a marriage record for a Mary Brown but as yet have made no connection. Of
Lavina and John there is no further record. Birdie did not seem to have much knowledge of the older children and only named C. C., R. A., Francis and Sophronia as children of Nathan.

According to Birdie's recitation of the family history, Rosalynn's mother passed away in Jefferson Co Ar in 1839 followed shortly after by a daughter; grief drove the rest to leave the area within 2 years. Land records of her brothers,
Marcellus and Wm Jackson, place the family in Rusk Co by Dec 1841, verifying Birdie's account. It is not known for certain if Nathan and Rosalynn married in Jefferson Co or in Rusk Co; no record seems to exist.
