    ! John was a farmer and harness-saddle maker. It was said he was with
    General Robert E. Lee when the South surrendered. He was a Lieutenant,
    Company G., Virginia Calvery. C.S.A. according to his grave marker.

    !I t was also said he courted Francis "Fannie" (Crow) Johnston, widow of
    Wm. "Buck" Johnston, and later married her daughter Mary. Their marriage
    record, dated 4-1-1877, states he was 40 years old and Mary was 18. She
    died at age ninety.

    ! Apparently after his father's (George Marshall, Sr.) death John
    Washington Marshall was more or less the head of the fsmily. He and
    Samuel P.L. were administrators of their father's estate.

    ! When their sister Joanna married John Jarrett on 4-17-1829 there was a
    note written by John, dated 4-17-1829, stating that he had just returned
    home from New Orleans and that Jarrett had made an agreement with his
    brother, Samuel P.L. to meet him in the Clerks Office. He, John and Samuel
    were busy with their goods (getting ready to open a retail store), so he was
    sending theie brother, George, Jr., to meet with Jarrett at the Clerk's
    Office (to apply for a Marriage License for Joanna and Jarrett).

    ! John and Samuel opened their retail business as partners. John became a
    leading wealthy merchant in Eddyville and was identified with all public
    enterprises and was a member of the Masonic fraternity.

    ! George Gracey was born in Pennsylvania and had enlisted at the fort here
    in Louisville, later being wounded in a minor skirmish. When he was 22 years
    old he married a widow, Mary Patton Vaughn, her husband Captain Vaughn
    having been killed five miles below Fort Louisville, leaving her with a small
    child, Nancy Vaughn.

    MATTHEW C. MARSHALL, merchant, Kuttawa, son of John W. and Martha
    (Gracey) Marshall, was born February 3, 1847, in Eddyville, Ky., the
    youngest of thirteen children. The father, a leading wealthy merchant of
    Eddyville, was identified with all public enterprises and a member of the
    Masonic fraternity. On December 8, 1822, John W. married Miss Martha
    Gracey. This lady is the daughter of George and Mary (Patton) Gracey. She
    was born September 13, 1806, in Eddyville; is still Undisclosed (in 1886) (died 17
    Feb 1893 in Lyon County), and is the oldest resident of the county. Of her
    children there are six Undisclosed in, viz.: Euclid, a telegraph operator in Bowling
    Green, Ky.; John, a farmer in Lyon County; Henry, of Kuttawa, a telegraph
    operator; Matthew, a merchant in Kentucky, and our principal subject; Mrs.
    Anna Poindexter, Mrs. Nellie Espie. Mrs. Marshall, with her husband, before
    his death, were members of the Methodist Church.
