    Notes:

The following letter is from Andrew Jackson Fine (1829-1917) to his
    brother
Levi Fine (1825-1865). It was transcribed by cousin Greeta from a copy
    that
was hand-traced by my Aunt Ruth, so I haven't seen the original and
    can't
    vouch for the transcription.
    Enjoy!
    Alice Ramsay

    March 2, 1859
Dear brother Levi: it is with pleasure that I seat myself down to write
    a
few words to inform you that we are all well at present except myself,
    and
hoping that when these few lines come to hand that they find you are all
    well
and doing well. Jane received a letter from Martha last week which gave
    much
satisfaction to hear from you all and to hear you are all well. I have
written 3 or 4 letters to you and have not heard the first scratch of a
    pen
from you yet. So I will try again, but I have not much to write.
I will give you the prices of a few things: gild horses are from $75.00
    to
$125.00. Work ones are $50.00 to $100.00 For yoke cows and calves
    $15.00 to
$30. Wheat from $1.00 to $1.25 a bu., corn is selling for 40 cents to
    50
cents a bu. and not much to sell at that. I have sold about $150.00
    worth of
corn that I raised last year and I think not much will be raised next
    year
for folks are not near done planting yet and it rains twice a day in the
    week
and 3 times on Sunday and that don't look much like planting corn. I
    want
you to write as soon as you get this letter. I have sold my last 4
    acres for
$500.00 and I will Take $300.00 for the other 40 acres joining it and 80
acres can be bought for $600.00. So ends the chapter.
My pretty Lizy Mack is married. But Dineker is single yet and so am I.
Thank God nevertheless that we are not all married yet by a jug full or
    a
    little more.
Levi if you do come back, I want you to bring me a nice little pony
    about 3
or 4 yrs. Old if you can get it for $25 or $30 dollars. There is to be
    a big
horse race the 23rd or 24th of June, at Stewerts track in Lincern County
    W.V.
Stewerts Den rock and Slim Biddens St. Louis mare and Sheltons St.
    Louis
horse and Carders St. Louis & I expect the Harkens & & repeat. So I
    expect
there will be some fast racing being done. I send my best love to my
friends, especially to Charity and husband when she sites him. So end
    the
chapter. So must come to a close.
But remain your affectionate brother until death,
Andrew J. Fine and children, Marion & Wiley Fine

    Notes for Cynthia Hopkins:
I found a handwritten copy of this obit
for Cynthia Hopkins, next to a copy of births and deaths in a family
bible. I'll try to type it as it is written.
Mrs. Cynthia Fine who died in Camp Branch on the 23rd of March was one
of the oldest residents of this part of the state. Her maiden name was
Cynthia Hopkins. She was born in Kentucky in 1798 and moved to Missouri
in 1810 and settled in what is now Montgomery County, near Belleville
about one year later in the locality she resided ever since. She lived
to see all her old neighbors pass away, and while new generations were
born in to the world and grew to manhood and womanhood, served their
time upon the stage of life and made their exit in the grate.
Unknown, this good woman lived on in quite peaceful and uneventful
way. Having arrived here a few years after the territory of Louisiana
was ceded to the United States she has seen Missouri organized into a
separate territory and admitted as a state. She has lived until the few
meager settlements in the old settled portion of the state has grown
into a population of near three mill souls. When she came here this
country was a vast expanse of wild prairie on the North, and a
wilderness on the South and their nearest neighbors lived miles apart.
What a contrast to the present day. When every foot of prairie is in
high state of cultivation dotted over with handsome residents and
instead of the savage war whoop that some times chased these early
settlers to Pondfort 35 miles east for refuge.
We now hear the snort of the steam engine as it all most hourly plunges
across our domain bearing away loaded trains of the products of the
fertile soil. The subject of this sketch was married in 1819 to the late
Abraham Fine with whom she lived happily for a period of sixty two
    years.
Mrs. Fine possessed a retentive memory and never tired of narrating
incidents connected with the early settlement of this state and often
spoke of her husband having to go 35 miles to muster and 50 miles to
    mill.
When she ferried across the River at St. Louis in 1810 she described
that place as being a little ugly French village strung along the River
and in front of a heavy thicket of black jacks. Her husband was offered
the ferry boat at that place as a present if he would attend to it. But
thinking the little town would never amount to anything he declined to
accept it. She also related that about that time 300 arpents of land now
in the hear of the great city was given in exhange for an ordinary side
    saddle.
Mrs. Fine was the mother of twelve children, three daughters and nine
sons, all of whom grew up and married, except one. Many of them settled
in the same neighborhood and are now heads of large families. Her
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren number about ninety.
Mrs. Fine never united with any church but was a good, motherly woman

Marriage Notes for Abraham Fine and Cynthia Hopkins:
The nearest Justice of the Peace wasJames Duncan, of Lincoln county, who lived sixteen miles distant, and was too old to go so far to marry perople. But he agreed to meet them half way.

Accordingly on the day of the wedding they set out on foot, and walked to the
designated place, where the 'Squire met them and performed the ceremony, and
they walked back home the same day. Mrs. Fines still has the dress that she
wore on that memorable occasion. Mr. Fines was a very active man, and no one
could beat him on a foot race.

He was one of the first grand jurymen of Montgomery county.

He says that while out hunting one day, he came upon a den of rattlesnakes, whose heads were so thick where they stretched themselves out of their den that they looked like corn stubbles in a field. He fired into them with his gun and then ran away without looking back to see what execution he had done.
