    Notes
    • Harthacnut, also known as Hardicanute or Canute III. He held the titles of King of Denmark from 1035 to 1042 and King of England from 1040 to 1042. Here’s a concise biography:

Birth: Harthacnut, born around 1019, was the only son of King Canute the Great and Emma of Normandy.
Co-King of Denmark: Around 1030, Canute appointed Harthacnut as co-king of Denmark.
      Succession Struggle in England:
When King Canute passed away in 1035, a faction led by Emma (Harthacnut’s mother) and Godwine, Earl of Wessex, aimed to elect Harthacnut as King of England.
However, Leofric, Earl of Mercia, supported by Londoners and northern thanes, secured the appointment of Harold, Canute’s son by Aelfgifu, as regent of England.
Emma and her supporters stayed in Winchester, where they protected Harthacnut’s interests and spread rumors about Harold’s birth.
      Challenges and Controversies:
Harthacnut’s delay in Denmark due to a Norwegian threat led to Harold’s recognition as King of England in 1037, resulting in Emma’s exile.
After Harold’s death in 1040, Harthacnut ascended the English throne but became an unpopular king.
He had Harold’s body exhumed and thrown into a fen.
In response to two officials being killed during tax collection in Worcester, Harthacnut sent an army that burned the city.
He summoned Edward the Confessor from Normandy and designated him as his heir.
The murder of Eadwulf, Earl of Northumbria, while under Harthacnut’s safe-conduct, earned him the label of a pledge breaker in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.
Harthacnut’s reign was marked by intrigue, power struggles, and complex relationships. His legacy remains intertwined with the tumultuous history of England and Denmark
