      (Research):Dorothy Franz Hilliard Life Story

I was born to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Paul Franz on May 23, 1933 at Yorktown, Texas in Dewitt County. After Undisclosed there for one month after my birth, I moved to a farm owned by my father. (The farm is 25 miles from Victoria and 16 miles from Goliad. Going from Victoria it is 5 miles on the other side of Schroeder, Texas.)
When I was six I was unable to go to school because I lived 4 miles (one way) from the Kilgore School. Because of this handicap, I didn't go to school until I was seven. After going a half year of my first year, I was promoted to the second (because my grandmother, Mrs. Annie Franz, taught me what was necessary to know in the first grade before I went to school).
During the summer of 1940 my father was called into the regular Army from the National Guards, we (my mother, brother, and myself) followed him up and went to Brownwood, Texas to live while he was stationed at Camp Bowie near Brownwood. After Undisclosed there a short time, my father went on maneuvers in Louisiana and the Carolinas so we came back to our farm.
After my father completed his maneuvers, the Army let him out on reserves. I started to school in Kilgore in the third grade but then in January nineteen hundred and fourty-two Daddy was recalled into the Army. So then when he went back to Camp Bowie, we moved to Bangs (a small town about ten miles from Brownwood) since we were unable to find a place in Brownwood. After going to school for one week in Bangs we followed Daddy to Florida where he was stationed at Camp Blandings. We lived a few miles from Camp in the small town of Starke (near Jacksonville, Florida). While here I went to Penny Farms to go to school. While I was going to this school the twelveth grade system grade came in so I skipped from the third to the fourth. I completed the fourth grade in Fla.
Then during the summer of 1942 we moved to Mansfield, La. Then on September 1, 1942 I had my first train ride. It was a 2,100 mile trip to Onset, Massachusetts (near Boston) to live with my father while he was stationed at Camp Edwards, Mass. I went to school in Onset for seven months then on April 1, 1942, my Father went overseas to Europe. I probably would have completed my two months of school but not only was my Daddy going overseas but my Grandmother Weiss of Yorktown,Texas had died during the week. So we came back to Yorktown where I completed the 5th grade and the went through all of the sixth grade there.
While I was in Yorktown in Sept. of 1944, Daddy came home without letting anyone know except my Grandmother Franz. I was in the show one afternoon when a friend of ours came in the show and got me saying Mother wanted me. As I was walking down the street I saw my Grandmother's car but since there was a glare on the glass I couldn't see who was in the car. so then I ran to the car to see my Grandmother but when I got to the car door (which was open) I saw Daddy. I leaped across the seat and hugged him and cried for dear life. That was the happiest cry I've ever had in my life.
After that Daddy went to Camp Clairborne near Forrest Hill, La. Where I went to school for a week. Then Daddy got his discharge on Nov. 11, 1944. so we lived in Cuero with my Grandmother Franz where I went to school in grade seven and two weeks of grade eight. Then I came to Victoria where I have lived since.
