Early Life and Education:
David Belden Lyman was born on July 28, 1803, in Hartford, Connecticut. He hailed from a family with a long Puritan history.
He attended Lenox Academy and Williams College from 1824 to 1828.
Later, he pursued theology at Andover Seminary and graduated. On October 12, 1831, he was ordained as a minister.
In 1831, he married Sarah Joiner (1806–1885), who would become his partner in missionary work and education.
Missionary Work in Hawaii:
David and Sarah Lyman sailed from Massachusetts to Hawaii in May 1832 as part of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions.
They were assigned to work at the mission in Hilo, where they played a pivotal role in shaping education and community life.
