  Notes	Obit: Hazel Betty Hightower Smith Tony Rockefeller Nov 2, 2000 Many of your know about the genealogical work relating to the Hightower family that was performed by Hazel Betty Hightower Smith. Hazel diligently worked to further our knowledge about the descendants of Joshua and Eleanor Hightower of Virginia. She published the "Leaf 'n Leaves" newsletters and was the author of "Clasping Hands With Generations Past". I have the sad duty to report to you that Hazel Betty Hightower Smith passed away on Monday, October 30, 2000 in Las Cruces, NM. Her daughter, Jeanine Jameson, asked me to notify members of the family about Hazel's death. Her body was cremated, and her ashes will be taken to the Hightower Cemetery in Elysian Fields, Harrison Co., TX during the Thanksgiving Holiday. Hazel Betty Hightower was born 4 September 1909 in Harrison Co., TX, the daughter of John Lawrence Hightower and Gussie Mabra. She married John Edwin Elliott, Jr. on 19 November 1927 in Marshall, Harrison Co., TX. To this union two children were born: James Tendall Elliott (deceased) and Jeanine Elliott. Hazel and John Elliott were divorced on 19 March 1945. She married Clarence Eudell Smith on 4 September 1947 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. They were divorced on 12 December 1962 in Carthage, Panola Co., TX. Hazel suffered with Alzheimer's disease for the past few years. Her daughter, Jeanine, took care of her at home until she was no longer able to do so. Hazel was placed in the Casa Del Oro Nursing Center in Las Cruces, NM in 1999 where she resided until her death. Hazel was a vibrant and intelligent person. We will miss her. Note: Posted as a courtesy. Hazel Hightower was a cousin of Tony Rockefeller .
