      Granny's Life Story

I kinda liked the cowboys - with their Stetsons, boots, red handkerchiefs tied around their necks, and six shooters on their hips was the statement Mrs. Annie (Paul Henry) Franz made when I, her oldest grandchild, asked what she thought of the young men of her courting days.
Her description when she met Paul Henry Franz was as follows - 23 years of age, black hair, brown eyes, dark olive complexion, over 5 ft and weighed 150 pounds. I remember when I was still at home the Mexican workhands always told Momma and Daddy that I was muy bonita.
When asked to tell about her romance with Grandpa, she said - At that time Lizzie, my oldest sister, was married to Otto Franz, and we (I and they) went to visit F(r)oederick Franz, Paul's father (who was ill with dropsy - Paul's mother was dead - his father died in October 1900). It was a hot summer evening when Paul came home from Dr. Kilgore in Germantown (now Schroeder, Texas) with medicine for his father.
I remember clearly that Paul's whole family was there. I was introduced to him. It was love at first sight.
Lizzie had two children, Manden and Gus, and I stayed with her weeks at a time to help wash and sew.
After our first meeting he came often to see me. He would always be mounted on his grey Spanish horse, Rover. We used to hire buggys at the livery stables to go to dances.
We courted for about 2 years, then were married December 31, 1899, in Victoria, Texas, at the Lutheran parsonage by Rev. Weiss. It was a simple wedding with only Lena and Mr. Klein present. After the wedding ceremony we went to his sister, Mrs. Clara (& Willie) Miller, for dinner. We stayed there overnight, stayed up all night.
We went to the farm the next day - (Paul's father sold Ω of the farm, 165 acres, to us in 1899. - his father stayed with us - he died in 1900 in the little house). About all we had then was a team of horses, a wagon, and of course, Rover. We lived in the big house.‚Äù
We had two sons, both of which were born in the front bedroom of the big house - Lee Henry Franz - August 22, 1902
      Raymond Paul Franz - November 17, 1910.
Paul died August 25, 1928, from hardening of the arteries and bad teeth. On Thursday, the 22nd, we went to Victoria to see Lee on his birthday (he was working at the creamery then). On the 23rd, he and Raymond went to Goliad to see dentist. While in Goliad he ate some chili and came home sick. Late that afternoon he passed out on the gallery. He died during the night.

      Ancestory -
Mother - Dina Weber born November 16, 1841
      Died January 16, 1919 78
Born on the Rhine River in Germany. Died during a flu epidemic in Cuero
      Sewed everything by hand

Father - Leopold Weber born November, 10, 1833
      Died January 19, 1919 86
      Born in Alaisse Lorraine
Died during flu epidemic in Cuero
More French than German - could speak French and German fluently.
Occupations-Policeman (7 years) in New Orleans, La.
Grocery Store - New Orleans and Cuero
      Saloon - Cuero (no killings)
Shoemaker - Goliad and Cuero - he was made to learn this trade when he was a boy
Had a brother, Rudaloph Weber, and a sister, Willamina Weber, that Granny knows of.

      Family Journey to Texas -
A boy was born in New Orleans, but died. Lena was born November 14, 1865, (died November 23, 1942)
Leopold Weber came to Texas on a sailboat from New Orleans. When he had a place to live at Oakville, Texas (by Helena County) he built a house and shoeshop. He got restless and moved to Goliad. After he had been established here for about a year he had his wife, Dina, and Lena, who was very sick, come to Texas. Lena was not expected to live and had she died she would have been thrown overboard rather than bring her dead body to Texas.
They landed at Old Indianola and took a stagecoach to Goliad to join Leopold, who was a shoemaker - he had the reputation of being so honest that he wouldn't take the hide off a dead cow.
Here Lizzie was born on May 25, 1873. when she was 3 weeks old, they moved to Cuero and opened a grocery store. Later opened a saloon on Main Street. Had these businesses a short time, then went into shoemaking, trade learned as a boy.
On January 19, 1875, I, Annie, was born on Stockdale Ave (now S. Railroad and Stockdale)
Another boy Willie was born after me sometime, but died of diptheria at 2 Ω years.
As a young girl I did everything I shouldn't do.
