      FINE, Thomas Jefferson, of Alma, Ark. was born June 15, 1847 at Fayetteville,
      Washington Co., Ark., the son of John Fine born in Tenn. who lived at
      Washington Co., Ark., Boskey Co., Tex. and Crawford Co., Ark. He was the son
      of Bill and Katie Fine, who lived in Tenn. and Washington Co., Ark. Maiden
      name of subject's mother was Rachel Mankins, dau. of Peter Mankins, who lived
      at Washington Co., Ark. and Tenn. and Ill., and lived to be one hundred and
      eleven years old. Subject was a farmer, A Democrat and a Baptist. He served
      in Whitson's and Sterman's Company in 1863.1864. He married Lara Rieef, dau.
      of Arn Rieef and wife Matilda Fambro, in 1867, at Fayetteville, Ark.

      By the time Thomas and his cousin William James were old enough to join in the Civil War, Thomas'brothers were all gone to serve with the Confederacy. The Union Army was in control of Crawford County, Arkansas. The Union Army was also taking land away from people in Arkansas who had sons fighting for the Confederacy.
      Jonathan Fine's (Thomas' father) property was on the list to be confiscated.
      Thomas Jefferson Fine and his friend and cousin, William James, joined or were
      conscripted into the Union Army. Jonathan's land was safe because he had a
      son fighting in the Union Army.
      Depending on the version of the story, theyeither actually went into battle and deserted to the other side at firstopportunity, or ran away to Texas to their Uncle Jake Sivley's and joined theConfederate Army there.
      Both Thomas Jefferson Fine and William James applied for and received pensions from both sides of the Civil War. Apparently, (Ihaven't seen the file, but am in process of ordering them) someone in Thomas'unit in the Union Army just said he was "away with the Regimental Band"
