    Notes
    • St. Anne, also known as Hannah, is a revered figure in Christian tradition. According to apocryphal writings, she is the mother of the Virgin Mary and the maternal grandmother of Jesus. Although her name is not mentioned in the Bible’s canonical gospels, her story has been preserved through other ancient texts.

Anne’s life closely mirrors the Old Testament account of Hannah, who bore the prophet Samuel after years of barrenness. Here are the key points from her life:

Birth and Marriage: Anne was born in Bethlehem, Judaea. She married Joachim, and together they led a devout and prosperous life in Nazareth.

Barrenness and Divine Promise: Grieved by her inability to conceive, Anne made a solemn vow to dedicate her firstborn child to the Lord’s service. In response, an angel appeared to her, promising that she would bear a remarkable child.

The Miracle of Mary: Anne miraculously conceived and gave birth to a daughter named Mary. Mary, in turn, would become the mother of Jesus. Anne’s role as Mary’s mother makes her a significant figure in the lineage of Christ.

Dedication at the Temple: When Mary was three years old, Anne and Joachim fulfilled Anne’s promise by bringing Mary to the Temple of Jerusalem. There, they left her to be raised in devotion to God.

Patronage and Feast Days: St. Anne is the patron saint of women in labor, grandparents, and unmarried women. Her feast day is celebrated on July 26. Additionally, the liturgical feasts of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (September 8) and the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (December 8) are based on accounts from the Protevangelium of James.

Anne’s unwavering faith, her role in Mary’s upbringing, and her connection to Jesus make her a beloved and influential figure in Christian history
