  Notes	Dorothea Payne Todd, born 5-20-1772 at Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina. Wither her parents had moved from Goochland Co., VA. John Payne her father, though a Quaker, served as an officer in the Revolutionary Army. After the war hi moved with his family to Philadelphia. James Madison is said to have met Dolly while in that city attending a session of Congress as a Representative from Virginia. Aaron Burr, credited with having been also a suitor for her hand, indtroduced madison to her. The daughter of John Payne and mary Coles. She was originally married to John Todd, a Philadelphia Lawyer. By this marriage, she had two children, a son and a daughter. The daughter together with its father, died of a Yellow fever Epidemic which visited Philadelphia a year or so before her second marrriage. The son, John Payne Todd (named for his maternal grandfather), grew to maturity and made his home for many years at montpelier with his stepfather and mother. She married her second husband (James Madison) April 15, 1794. He became the 4th president of the USA. There wedding took place at harewood in Jefferson Co., Virginia. It was within the home of George Steptoe Washington, the nephew of George Washington, who married Dolly's younger sister Lucy Payne. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Alex Balmaine, a kinsman of the Groom. In the same year in which they married, James Madison ran for the US Senate but was defeated by Henry Tazwell of Brunswick Co., for whom Tazwell Co., was named after. It is said that Patrick Henry threw his support to Tazewell in the senatorial contest and was instrumental in electing him.
