- ! Eulogy delivered by husband Andrew.
JOAN MCCORD HINSHAW - who was she--what were her early days like -
what had she done in her life - how best can we describe her as a person?
! She was born 49 years ago on Church Street in this town of Centerville,
TN. Her mother's maiden name was Hudspeth, Johny (Hudspeth) Crowe and
her father is John Paul McCord, both of who survive her and are here today
to honor her memory.
! Joan, by all accounts was one of the prettiest girls in Centerville. She was
very active and by her own words one of the best roller skaters in this
area. She claimed to have skated on every paved street, every sidewalk,
every curb, and every church step in town.
! Joan's life - until she was twelve - was spent with her parents,
grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in the immediate area of her
birthplace. When she was twelve she went to live with her mother and
stepfather, Robert Crowe (1914-1896) of Nunnelly, Tennessee who were
then residing in Meridian, Mississippi. At an early age she married and had
one daughter by that marriage, Lisa Gullet.
! During her years in Centerville and Meridian, Joan became very proficient
in the art of dance, which later became her profession in both Mississippi
and New York. Her early years of family involvement again became
instrumental in her life and she married Caby Smith and by him gave birth
to two additional children, Caby Carroll Smith and Fara Leigh Smith. Joan
and her family moved to the Washington, D. C. - Virginia area, and at a later
point the marriage failed but the children and the parents remained on
friendly terms and all lived in the immediate area.
! However, Joan always striving to be a good mother and example to her
children displayed her work ethic and pride in accomplishment to became a
key cog in the wheel of political campaigns on the national level. She
campaigned for candidates for the U. S. Senate and the House of
Representatives.
! These endeavors resulted in her becoming the radio and television editor
for political campaigns for the House of Representatives Congressional
Campaign Committee. She advised, demonstrated, and directly assisted
Members of Congress and a Vice President in recording comments for
public release.
! After she had performed these tasks so well she became Administrative
Assistant to Congressman Andrew Hinshaw in charge of his Washington
office and played another key role in his re-election campaign. Joan and Mr.
Hinshaw became mutual professional admirers from their first meeting and
later became husband and wife.
! So Joan, from humble beginnings in this town, rose to a professional
dancing career and parlayed her expertise in meeting and performing
before the public to participating in a key way at the highest legislative
levels in the Country - a real service to us all.
! In the course of this, she directed a large Congressional staff, directed
research for legislation, advised Congressional committee staffs, and was
a spokesperson for Congressmen in their absences. SHE WAS AN
ACHIEVER. More recently she worked for an interior decorating firm in
Nashville, again in the public eye.
! Notwithstanding all these personal achievements, she was a family person
who yearned for all her family ties. After all her children were grown and
away from home, she wanted to move back to Centerville to be with other
family, aunts, uncles, parents, cousins, and with friends.
! Joan carried her poise, beauty, and concern for others well-being with her
to the moment of her death. To her- after all the persona!
accomplishments - family and personal happiness outweighed all the
adulation and esteem that public life can offer.
! She epitomized a good mother, a good wife, and a good daughter--and in
doing so leaves a legacy so important to us all - be honest, true, helpful,
and live with those features so necessary if we are to fulfill the wishes of
our Lord and Saviour --- SHE DID IT HER WAY and is loved for that.
! Her husband, her mother and father, her children, her aunts, uncles and
family and friends and the father of her children are here to pay her
homage as a person and to show their love for her and for the
wholesomeness she typified.
! Joan's early religious training was at the Church of Christ across from
where she was born. She was a firm believer in her faith and those who
knew her best know that she is happy being with our Lord and that she died
knowing that her children had the very best she could offer, and no more
than that can any of us offer to anyone.
! The song you are about to hear, "Softly As I Leave You Now", sung by Elvis
Presley is a true story about a woman who knows she is about to die. She
is awake and looking at her sleeping husband sitting in an adjacent chair.
The words express her thoughts that she wants to die before her husband
awakes and asks her to stay for another hour. The song expresses better
than any words spoken here how Joan felt about leaving all of us, her family
and friends. God Bless Her.
