      My Dear Wife
I have just returned from witnessing one of the horrors of war. The Military execution of two men for desertion. They were shot today about 3 O'clock PM in the presence of the entire Division of the army here. The Division was drawn up in 3 sides of a hollow square fronting the river the open side on the river in a large field just in the lower edge of Pine Bluff -- The procession was formed as follows -- Band of music -- The executioners 24 men with Lieutanant and Sargts -- The Priest with the two prisoners on either arm -- A wagon with two Coffins -- About two Companies as guard. The procession was formed at the Court House and marched to the music of the "Dead March" to the Square -- Marched all around the square on the innder side then to the graves which had been dug in the Centre. The Sentence was then read. The Priest prayed with and exhorted them -- after which the Commands to ready, aim & fire was given when 24 muskets rung forth their Melancholly Sounds 12 of which were Charged with blanks and 12 with Shot Cartridges. The poor fellows fell over on their faces, gasped a little and were gone. They were examined by physicians, found to be dead and were buried on the fatal spot. This is a melancholly and tragic end for them but it is the just doom of the deserter. I had rather see a hundred killed in battle than these poor devils here. . . ."
