  Notes	Notes for James Caroll Gilliland: JOHN GILLILAND AN EARLY SETTLER IN COCKE COUNTY A relative of James unsure how connected: JOHN GILLILAND was on of the early settlers near the mouth of the BIG PIGEON was JOHN GILLILAND, was made a crop of corn on his land in 1783, and a year or two later brought his large family to the place, where he continued to live until the time of his death about 1788-89. He left a large family of children, including eight who were sons. He took an active part in the organization of the State of Franklin and was a member of the convention of 1785 who wrote the Constitution of the new State. JOHN GILLILAND donated fifty acres of his land for the first county seat of COCKE COUNTY.
