Records 1836-1881 Will Book 1836-1850 (240,242,247,250) Jan 1849 Will of Peter Fine dec'd; to wife Susanah, dwelling house, furniture, stock,negro Lucy and her offspring Julia & Harriet; at wife's death negroes to be free and receive $200; to James Carrell who is bound to me until he is 21 and who is now about 17, all lands and appurtenances with before named exceptions, all balance of stock and estatee at death of wife; exec. friend John Mason Lillard; 10 Jan. 1848; Wit. James & Wm. Lillard. will proven Jan 1849. Inventory and sale bill filed. "One quip from the pages of the class book for the Goodfield Methodist Episcopal Church (Decatur Circuit), dated March 21, 1868, informs its readers as to the route to freedom pursued by many of the former black slaves: "All the above Colored Members have left us. Gone north." Yet, some of the negroes remained in the county. Lucy Fine, once a ward of Peter Fine (d. 1848), lived on the plantation three miles north of Decatur. When her owner died, Lucy became the property of Peter's widow, Susannah Fine. His will had granted Lucy and her children, Julia and Harriet, their freedom following the death of Susannah. Peter Fine also left a legacy of $200 to his black slaves. After her emancipation, "Aunt" Lucy purchased a small tract of land about her cabin and remained to die in the county half-a-century later.
