REF: Dennis Mack Smith, *A History of Sicily. Medieval Sicily 800-1713.*, NY (Viking Press) 1968, p 24": The moment when the younger Roger II took over government from his mother is not known. Certainly it was before 1113 when she was foolish enough to marry King Baldwin of Jerusalem. Eye-witnesses were dazzled by the splendour of her fleet as she left for the Holy Land, by the gold and silver which plated the prow of her galley, and its carpet of gold thread.
No doubt this marriage represented a considerable loss of wealth to Sicily.
Baldwin was interested only in her dowry, to pay off his debts and his soldiers. He already had another wife, and after spending the money he easily made the Pope declare this new marriage void. Possibly Roger had encouraged his mother's escapade, hoping to inherit Baldwin's throne. Before long, however, he had changed his County of Sicily into a kingdom on its own."
