Notes	He was the youngest child of William and Dorothea (Rabke) Bluhm. When the family moved to Austwell in 1912, Roland attended school and participated in baseball and basketball. He began his working career early as a butcher for Coward's Meat Market. He also worked for Mr. J.W. Johnson, Sr. in his grocery store which was located on Main Street. In 1924 at the age of 25, he began working with Austin-McDowell Company as a general clerk which paid him $75.00 per month. It was here where he met Melva Hill. Melva was born April 20, 1906 and came to Austwell in 1920 when she was 13 years old. She attended the local high school and played basketball for her school. When she graduated, she was one of five who graduated in 1925. Two days later, she went to work at Austin-McDowell Company as a clerk earning $35.00 per month. Roland and Melva were married in her mother's home in Austwell on Saturday, May 1, 1926. Rev. C.S. Long, pastor of the Refugio Presbyterian Church performed the ceremony. After the wedding, the couple drove to Tivoli to attend a "chautauqua" (carnival), returning to work on Monday, May 3. They had two children, Frances Estelle born September 25, 1936 and Roland Clarke who died at birth, December 7, 1940. The couple continued to work for Austin-McDowell and accumulated a total of 85 years with the company until the "Mercantile" closed in 1968. Beginning in 1938, and for the next 40 years, Roland was engaged in farming and ranching near Austwell. After a year of retirement, the couple assumed ownership of Bluhm Drug from Bruno Bluhm. The most popular item sold was delicious ice cream. At this time, the U.S. Post Office was located within the Drug Store. In 1981, Roland and Melva sold the Drug Store to Tony Flores. On August 24, 1981, Roland died and is buried in the Tivoli Cemetery. He and Melva had been married over 55 years. Melva still maintains their home in Austwell.
