    Notes
    • Saint Joachim, also known as Yehoyaqim in Hebrew or Iōākeím in Greek, holds a significant place in Christian tradition. He is revered as the husband of Saint Anne, the father of Mary, and the maternal grandfather of Jesus. Although his story is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible, it appears in the apocryphal Gospel of James.

Joachim was born in Nazareth and grew up in a devout Jewish family. His marriage to Saint Anne, a deeply faithful and virtuous woman, was marked by their fervent prayers for a child. However, they faced heartbreak as they remained childless. At the temple, Joachim’s sacrifice was rejected, seemingly a sign of divine displeasure due to their childlessness. In response, Joachim withdrew to the desert, where he fasted and did penance for 40 days. It was during this time that angels appeared to both Joachim and Anne, promising them a child.

Upon his return to Jerusalem, Joachim embraced Anne at the city gate. An ancient belief held that a child born to elderly parents who had given up hope of having offspring was destined for greatness. This parallel resonates with similar stories in the Old Testament, such as Sarah (wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac) and Hannah (mother of Samuel), as well as in the New Testament with the parents of St. John the Baptist.

The cycle of legends surrounding Joachim and Anne was popularized in Christian art until the Council of Trent restricted the depiction of apocryphal events. Joachim’s feast day is July 26, shared with Saint Anne. Initially celebrated on March 20, it was later transferred to August 16 to coincide with the Assumption of Mary. Through his legacy, Joachim remains a symbol of faith, hope, and the miraculous fulfillment of divine promises

gift of God. (1.) The son of Levi, and father of Heli (Luke 3:24).
