- Obituary of Jasper Gray..
."Jasper Gray died at his home Thursdayafter a short illness. He was 68 years old. He leaves to mourn his death, hiswife and four children - Alfred and Frank Gray, Mrs. Ray Gailbreath and Mrs.Allen Kyker. Three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Rutherford, Mauchula, Florida, Mrs.Callie Lewis, Orleans, Indiana; Mrs. Amands Glass, Ashville, North Carolina;and Mrs. Susie Owsley, Louisville, Kentucky. Two brothers, Clinton and BruceGray, Orleanas, Indiana.
He had many friends and was well known as he was one of the leading
teachers of Cocke County for 39 years. He was well read on every subject. He
had read the New Testament through 68 times, on an average of once each year
of his life.
Funeral services were conducted at the Wilsonville Church, Friday
afternoon, 27 November, 1936, with Reverand J. L. Davis officiating. Burian wa
at the Fine Cemetery"1910 Cocke Co. Census Tenn. also list the following children Undisclosed with Jasper and Jane; Linda Henry 24, Clara Henry 18, Gladys Henry 16 and a Granddaughter Hazel Henry age 5 years.
In the years, 1888 and 1889, Jasper Gray taught school ( for a colony of Halls) . He received twenty dollars per month and paid four of it for board. All children in school were Halls. Jasper boarded with a family who had ten children, the parents and teacher made thirteen people, all of whom lived in one room, cooking, eating, and sleeping in the same room. This family had seven cats and four hound dogs in the room.
