    • Biography
      George Cockburn is believed to be the third consecutive Cockburn of his line named George. He was born around 1750 in Martin County, North Carolina. In 1779, he married Frances Williams. [1]. A George Cockburn paid taxes in Martin County in 1779 [could have been his father or grandfather]. In 1781-82, a Capt. George Cockburn served in the Martin County regiment. He appears on the 1790 census in Martin County. He died between March and May 1799 in Edgecombe County, based on the dates his will was written and probated. It names wife Frances, daughters Elizabeth Cockburn, Mary Cockburn, son George Cockburn (believed to be George Benton Cockburn), son Theophilus (not yet 21), daughter Winifred (not yet 18), daughter Frances Cockburn, and Marie Cockburn [presumed same as Mary].
