    Notes
    • St. Jude, also known as Thaddaeus, was one of the original Twelve Apostles of Jesus. Key points about his life:

      Identity and Role:
St. Jude is mentioned in the New Testament as one of the apostles.
In the Gospel of John (14:22), he is referred to as Judas but “not Iscariot” to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.
He is also listed in Luke 6:16 and Acts 1:13 as “Judas of James”.
Depending on the Bible consulted, he is probably the son (Revised Standard and New English) or brother (Authorized and Douay) of St. James the Less, son of Alphaeus.
      Canonical Letter of Jude:
St. Jude is reputed to be the author of the Letter of Jude in the New Testament.
This letter warns against licentious and blasphemous heretics.
It is one of the shortest books in the Bible.
      Devotion and Patronage:
The devotion to St. Jude as the patron saint of desperate causes began in France and Germany in the late 18th century.
He is distinguished in John 14:22 as Judas but “not Iscariot” to avoid confusion with the betrayer.
Legends credit him and St. Simon the Apostle with missionary work and martyrdom in Persia.
Since the 8th century, the Western church has commemorated them together on October 28.
      Martyrdom:
St. Jude’s history after Jesus’ Ascension is unknown.
He is believed to have come from the Zealots, a Jewish nationalistic party prior to 70 CE.
Legends suggest that he and St. Simon were martyred by decapitation with a hatchet.
In summary, St. Jude played a significant role as an apostle, authored a canonical letter, and is venerated as the patron saint of desperate causes. His feast day is celebrated on October 28 in the Western tradition and on June 19 and August 21 in the Eastern tradition
