    Notes
    • Saint James the Great, also known as James the Elder, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. His life and legacy are rich with significance in Christian tradition. Let’s delve into some key aspects of his story:

      Background and Family:
James was the son of Zebedee and Salome. Interestingly, Salome was a sister of Mary (the mother of Jesus), which makes James the Great a cousin of Jesus.
He is often referred to as “the Greater” to distinguish him from another apostle named James “the Less”. The term “greater” here doesn’t imply importance but rather indicates that he was older or taller.
Discipleship and Close Relationship with Jesus:
James was among the first disciples to follow Jesus. Along with his brother John and Peter, he formed an informal triumvirate among the Twelve Apostles.
Jesus allowed James, John, and Peter to witness significant events that others did not, including the raising of Jairus’ daughter, the Transfiguration, and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.
      Request for Glory:
James and John (or, in another tradition, their mother) once asked Jesus to grant them seats on his right and left in his glory.
Jesus responded by asking if they were ready to share in his suffering, emphasizing that true honor comes from self-sacrifice.
      Martyrdom:
Herod Agrippa (referred to as “Herod the king” in the Acts of the Apostles) ordered James’s execution by the sword.
Some accounts suggest that James’s fiery temper earned him and his brother the nickname “Sons of Thunder”.
His remains are traditionally believed to be held in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.
      Patronage and Attributes:
Saint James is the patron saint of Spain and is venerated in various places, including Guatemala, Seattle, and Nicaragua.
His symbols include the red martyr’s robe, the scallop shell (associated with pilgrimages), and the pilgrim’s hat.
In summary, Saint James the Great played a significant role in spreading the teachings of Jesus and ultimately gave his life as a martyr for the faith. His legacy continues to inspire believers around the world.
