Notes |
- My mother, AUDREY, passed away at the young age of 38, leaving 7 children, 3 of whom were very young. She died in the Ranger, TX hospital of complications of a hysterectomy. As I remember and have always been told, a nurse there told my older sister that Mother had cancer. The death certificate stated that she had Chronic Myocarditis and acute Nephritis. She was buried beside her mother and
father, and younger brother Jack on the other side, in the San Saba City Cemetery, San Saba, TX.
Records indicate that three out of four in mother's family died from heart disease, and as of 1998, her husband LEE ROY BALLARD and four of their children have died of cancer.
My older sister, Mary Opal (barely 19 years of age) took care of us younger three for almost one year after which she enlisted the help of the Eastland Church of Christ to get us into a Childrens' home. We were taken to Boles Home in Quinlan, Texas, in October 1943, where we grew up and I was there until I graduated high school in 1953. Boles Home is located about 50 miles S.E. of Dallas, TX, on Hiway 34. Following high school, I went to what was then called Abilene Christian College, now Abilene University, in Abilene, TX.
AUDREY was born in San Saba, TX, of parents Blanche McGill and Henry Walker Winslow, Sr., whose ancestors had come to Texas from Missouri, and before that from Orange County Virginia.
I don't remember my mother but my sister Opal says she was a very special mother. She had a hard life, as Lee Ballard was not a good provider.
