One source says Beatrice's father was Robert de Beauchamp. If she was
the heiress of her grandfather, though, she probably didn't have surviving
brothers or uncles. (Granted, her inheritance from her grandfather does not
prove that she got ALL his property, and I haven't traced his holdings to
see.) Her lover attacked Hugh de Morville with a sword but that she cried out
in English to warn Hugh. It was used as evidence that the Scoto- Normans
could speak English, perhaps in preference to French. Hugh and Beatrice are
commemorated on a plaque at Dryburgh Abbey and at least Hugh is supposed to be buried there, possibly Beatrice was, too.

W.H. Turton, _The Plantagenet Ancestry_ (1928, reprinted Baltimore 1968),
says Beatrice de Beauchamp was the daughter of Pagan de Beauchamp and

On the Percies: The founder of the family was a Danish chieftain, Manfred, who died in 880. His son, Galfred, was a general of Rollo's in Normandy. The next of importance would be William, who came with the Conqueror , and who was the first Lord Percy. He died in 1097. The descendants of his son, Alan, founded the Percies of Heyshott and William's son, Richard, founded the Percies of Dunsley. Of the Children of William II, only daughters survived and of these only one had children. She married Josceline de Lovain, brother of Adeliza, second wife of Henry II. Lori Garner Elmore has Matilda married to David, Earl of Huntington, but has a sister "Mabel" married to William d 'Albini, Earl of Arundel. She has the marriage taking place in 1230, & agrees that Matilda died in 1233. Given the # of children Matilda supposedly had here with William, I really wonder if in fact William married this sister Mabel.

Lori lists Matilda as "Maud."

The University of Hull shows Matilda the mother of all the children and marrying both men. I tend to think Lori's research makes more sense except a 1230 marriage date would put Mabel, who she has as older than Maud/Matilda, pretty old to be having children (as Maude/Matilda was born in 1171).

Arnaud-Bellee, 1978: Henry de Bohon (1176-1220), earl of Hereford, played an important role in the revolt of the barons against King John. Born in 1176, he succeeded his grandfather honorably. The reign of King John (1199-1216) started out well for Henry when he was created earl of Hereford on 28 April 1199. Henry was the first of the Bohons to have the title, which included an
annual income. The following year Henry and other nobles summoned his uncle in Scotland, William the Lion, to appear at Lincoln to do homage. In 1203 Henry witnessed a document where King John confirmed the dowry of Queen Isabelle. The principal interests of the Bohons were in England. Henry paid taxes of 50 marks and a groom, corresponding to 20 parts of a knight's fee, on the Huntington land he inherited from his mother. In Normandy, Henry kept his more modest holdings (from Humphrey I) at Carentan and Pont D'Ouve. After the first time France reclaimed Normandy (1204), Henry stayed loyal to John. His lands in Normandy were confiscated by Philip- Auguste. Then King John imposed a heavy tax to maintain the campaign of 1213-1214 to prevent the crushing of a coalition formed at Bouvines on 27 July 1214 by England, Flanders, and the German Empire. The king was discredited and there was
general discontent. The forces were dissatisfied that the king awarded certain barons without their having to go through the regular tests and examinations.
Then there was a revolt of barons in which Henry took an active part. The revolt ended with the signing of the Magna Carta at Runnymede (Surrey) on 12 July 1215. The lands that had been confiscated from Henry were returned and the 25 lords took it upon themselves to make sure the charter was enforced. The Bohons enjoyed being in possession of great lands at the frontier of the Welsh country which was always threatened. The other marcher lords enjoyed it, too, because their military importance and independence was greater than that of other royal lords. Politically they were stronger by being closer to the king. The lull was cut short when the war restarted. The following year John had Pope Innocent III excommunicate the earl of Hereford, which only increased the opposition to the king. John joined forces with the army of Prince Louis of France (the future Louis VIII) when barons from the north landed in England.
John died on October 19, 1216, but Henry de Bohon did not ally himself with the new king, Henry III. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lincoln on 20 May 1217, where Louis of France was defeated. Henry gave the churches of Boxe and Wilsford (Lincolnshire) to the priory of Monkton Farley, and
gave a pension to St. Nicolas Hospital in Salisbury. Henry de Bohon died 1 June 1220 while on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. His body was returned
to Lanthony abbey.

France, Earl Richard de Clare died. Two weeks later he was buried at
Tewkesbury Abbey. The earl had not played a conspicuous role in the baronial
movement since the settlement of 1261; he had been in ill health for some
months before his death, and rumors circulated that he had been poisoned.
[Footnote by Altschul: "E.g., Dunstable, p. 219' *Annales Cambriae*, pp. 99-100, where "Gilbert" is wrongly given for "Richard." These chronicles have probably confused the earl's natural death with the alleged poison plot of 1258."]" [Was Richard maybe poisoned at the instigation of Simon de Montfort or some of his allies?] Henry had settled with the rebellious barons in 1261 (p 92). Richard de Clare had at first sided with the barons in the antiroyalist
movement which began in the summer of 1258 or thereabouts (p 82-87), but
appears to have withdrawn support shortly after December 1258 (p 87).

REF: "Falls the Shadow" Sharon Kay Penman: April 5 1264 Bran de Montfort leads defense of St. Andrew's Priory within the town & fights with suicidal bravery. The walls had been undermined by the Prior who was secretly in league with Prince Edward, & Bran was captured by some common soldiers. At that point William de Lusignan & Ralph de Mortimer rode up. Bran had just before taken part in the looting of de Mortimer's lands in Radnorshire. de Lusignan ordered his nephew Bran killed on the spot, but Dafydd ap Gruffydd rode up & intervened telling them Edward would be displeased to see his cousin Bran killed. de Lusignan attempts to argue but Philip Basset (who commanded the attackers) then rode up & commanded Bran be taken to Edward, and not to be escorted by de Lusignan or de Mortimer, as they would arrange an "accident" for Bran. Bran was congratulated for his gallant bravery by Edward & then sent to King Henry who moved him to Windsor Castle. In November 1264, the Marchers Roger de Mortimer & Roger de Clifford rebelled again (had done so in July 1264). Again Llywelyn ap Gruffydd allied with Simon de Montfort & the rebels surrendered at Worcester Dec 12 1264. Mortimer & Clifford were exiled to Ireland for a year. At the Battle of Evesham (Aug 4 1265) de Mortimer helped to trap Montfort by converging with Prince Edward upon Montfort's vastly outnumbered force. Before the battle began, several thousand Welsh troops loaned to Montfort by his ally Llywelyn ap Gruffydd deserted Montfort; de Mortimer & his men methodically hunted them down throughout the surrounding countryside & cold bloodedly murdered almost all of them. Mortimer sent Montfort's head back to Wigmore Castle to his wife as a gift.

REF: Sharon Kay Penman "The Reckoning" : King Edward launched his war on Llywelyn ap Gruffydd the Last Prince of Wales on 12 Nov 1276. He did not personally take part in the campaign until the following summer, but de Mortimer scored a mjaor success in the early phases of the war, who in April 1277 siezed Llywelyn's castle at Dolforwyn & restored Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn to power in Powys (ap Gwenwynwyn had sconspired with Llywelyn's brother Dafydd to murder Llywelyn and upon discovery had fleed to England). Mortimer ultimately made an alliance with Llywelyn ap Gruffydd against Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn. When Llywelyn was goaded by his feckless brother Dafydd into Wales' last fatal war with England & Edward "Longshanks" on Palm Sunday 1282, Roger de Clifford was made Edward's warlord for mid-Wales, one of three Welsh commands; however, he died before the war could successfully be prosecuted.

Maud de Lacy, widow of Richard, earl of Gloucester, outlived her husband by more than a quarter of a century, dying in March 1289. From 1262 until her death she held one-third of the Clare inheritance in dower, although her son Earl Gilbert the Red did successfully challenge the original composition of her dower portion, which was readjusted in 1267. Maud did not remarry, preferring to spend her long widowhood Undisclosed off the revenues of her estates, contributing handsomely to ecclesiastical foundations, and helping to promote her children. Her activities on behalf of her daughters Margaret and Rohese have been noted [see note under her husband Richard], and she also attempted, with less success, to present her son Bogo to the church of Adlingfleet in Yorkshire. Her gifts to religious houses were numerous. In 1248 Earl Richard founded Clare Priory, the first house of Austin Friars in England, and after his death the countess continued his generosity with several grants of land to the priory. In addition, a scheme to found an Augustinian nunnery attracted her. In 1284 she refounded the priory of Canonsleigh in Devon. Canonsleigh was originally established for seven Augustinian canons by Walter de Clavill, a mesne tenant of the honor of Gloucester, but in 1284 Maud
provided an annual gift of L200 for the support of an abbess and 40 canonesses of that order. She had originally had the idea of doing this for
Sandleford Priory in Berkshire, but for some reason the plan fell through in 1274, and a decade later she refounded Canonsleigh instead. By 1286 the new nunnery was in existence, and the dispossessed canons were under
royal protection."
