    A story related by Grace Bryant to Vicki Matte and Foster Rose:

    Louise Hearld Deaton left her husband and later became involved with Clarence Bryant. For some reason, unknown to all, the Hearld brothers, all very large men, took exception to this relationship and decided to beat up Clarence Bryant. There was to be a Memorial Day picnic at a cemetery in Breathitt County. The Hearld brothers decided to waylay Clarence as he came to the picnic on a mule. Clarence, as well as all the Bryant boys, were slight in build. The Hearld brothers did stop Clarence, threatening to do him harm, but Clarence refused to get off the mule. A passer-by saw what was happening and hurried on to tell. He met up with Mitchell Bryant and told his story. Mitchell asked to have the man's gun. The man refused to give it to Mitchell but said, "I'll not stop you from taking anything off me that can be of help to you." With that he threw wide his arms and Mitchell took the gun from his pocket. He hurried to where Clarence was being threatened and asked the men to leave him alone. Their reply was, "If we can't get him off the mule, we'll just beat you up." They started toward Mitchell. Mitchell told them to get back and leave them both alone but the brothers kept coming. Mitchell backed up until he was against a fence. Realizing he could go no further, he said, "If you come any closer, I'll kill you." They came closer and he fired, killing one brother.
    Mitchell was tried for murder and acquitted. However, the judge, fearing the outbreak of a feud, had Mitchell and Clarence tried on a lesser charge and they were convicted. Mitchell served seven years. Clarence got one year but it is believed he did not serve any time. Mitchell was such an exemplary prisoner he was allowed to work outside the prison and was a gardener at the governor's mansion. He did such excellent work during that time that the governor paid him. He sent his money home to his sister Myrtie. She invested it, at Mitchell's request, in a farm put in her name. When Mitchell got out of prison, he finished paying off the farm and the deed was transferred to his own name.
    Myrtie's son, Jr., tried to sue Mitchell for the farm on his mother's death, claiming that it belonged to Myrtie and was part of the estate. He failed in his attempt and Mitchell kept the farm.

    Again to keep from feuding, Clarence and Louise married and had one child. They resided in Powell County, Kentucky until their deaths.

    Mitchell married Ethel Rosevelt Bryant between 1912 and 1946. Ethel was born between 1882 and 1906; died between 1928 and 1994. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
